VARO Energy ("VARO”) is the partner of choice for customers in the energy transition by providing the sustainable and reliable energy solutions that they need to decarbonize. Engine 1 includes manufacturing, storage, distribution, marketing, and trading of conventional energies. Engine 2 activities are focused on sustainable energies and include biofuels, biogas, green hydrogen, e-mobility, and nature-based carbon removals. VARO plans to invest around $3.5 billion over the 2022-26 period, with two-third committed to sustainable energies. The company has a net zero target for scope 1, 2 and 3 by 2040. VARO Energy, launched in 2012, is currently expanding to be at the forefront of renewable and low/no carbon offerings to meet our customers’ changing energy needs. For example, we are working on major green H2 projects, to reduce the carbon footprint of our refineries, we commenced the development of nature-based CO2 removal projects, and created a collaboration on crude tall oil for advanced biofuels. In the EV space, we acquired the leading B2B charging hub developer Elexon and a majority stake in EV-charging software provider Road.
We are proud to have a strong focus on renewable energy sources. The share of our Renewables business, bringing biofuel, carbon offset opportunities and e-mobility projects to mobility markets, has grown significantly in recent years and will be one of VARO’s biggest margin drivers.
We are deeply convinced that e-mobility has a significant role to play in road transportation. Within VARO Renewables, the E-mobility-team has developed a large funnel of commercial vehicle charging leads and projects in its key countries, and the first projects have been realized.

As part of our development within the E-mobility-team, part of the VARO Renewables department, we are seeking candidates to join us in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. You will join an energetic, international team with an entrepreneurial mindset embracing the various opportunities and challenges that will inevitably come our way.
THE POSITION
Power is becoming an increasingly important part of our portfolio. We are therefore expanding our capabilities in the power market. We already established a modelling framework, covering market analytics, deal structuring and pricing. Recently, we became member of EPEX and EEX and we started supplying our first EV truck charging station. In coming years, we want to further leverage our power infrastructure for selected partner companies (EV/H2 production/Biofuels production).
We are hence looking for an originator to expand our power business.
You will be responsible for originating and structuring power transactions with selected counterparts, typical in the field of EV, batteries, biofuels, ‘gas to power’ switching and production of H2, complemented by ETS-2 related business. Our targets for structured transactions are ambitious and require a self-starter to find business opportunities, analytically assess the value and structure transactions.
You will work in a team led by business managers who will support and empower you as Varo continues to build its power capabilities and portfolio. You can leverage our existing customer base, both in the traditional fuels space as in the EV space. We are looking for a person who enjoys working in a flexible organization where the ‘way of working’ for your business area is still being established.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Identify and contact power/renewable energy users, mainly in the Netherlands and Germany, and asses how they can benefit from our trading- and forecasting infrastructure;
Structure the terms and conditions in close cooperation with analytical teams and the portfolio manager;
Negotiate and conclude tailored contracts to achieve volume and margin targets within a lean and organization setting;
Research and identify market opportunities and threats in a rapid changing environment;
Collaborate with a diverse team with complementing skill set( top mgt traders, EV business developers etc.) to share insights and further develop business opportunities;
Proactively prioritize competing business demands to be efficient and gain the highest return and value;
YOUR PROFILE
In order to fulfill the content of the job the ideal candidate has:
Fluency in both Dutch and English is a must. German is a plus;
Minimum 4 years of working experience in the European power sector;
Master degree: good academic record business and or Technical background;
Ability to oversee complexity (i.e. understanding effects of grid tariffs, flexibility, commodity prices, value of green certificates etc. to make appropriate business propositions);
Basic experience with origination/structured deals;
Commercial feeling, within an analytical mindset.
